Intel Xeon 6724P

Intel Xeon 6724P in Real Servers: High Clock Speeds Instead of Dozens of Cores

The Intel Xeon 6724P stands apart from most modern server processors. It has 16 cores and 32 threads, but reaches up to 4.3 GHz, with a claimed all-core frequency of up to 4.2 GHz. The processor targets systems where per-core performance matters and software is licensed by the number of CPU cores. For large-scale virtualization and highly parallel workloads, Intel offers Xeon models with significantly higher core counts.

With a recommended price of around $4,057, the Xeon 6724P looks expensive even by server standards. However, that price can be justified in databases, financial software, and other enterprise systems where licensing costs are tied to the number of processor cores. In such environments, increasing the core count can raise the total cost of the software stack more than it improves performance.

Xeon 6724P Performance in Production Servers

Published SPECrate 2017 Integer Base results provide a useful view of the processor’s performance. The benchmark measures the total throughput of a system across a set of integer workloads and makes it possible to compare single-socket and dual-socket configurations.

Server Platform CPU Configuration Total Cores / Threads Memory SPECrate 2017 Integer Base
Dell PowerEdge R570 1 × Intel Xeon 6724P 16 / 32 256 GB DDR5-6400 204
Dell PowerEdge R670 2 × Intel Xeon 6724P 32 / 64 512 GB DDR5-6400 402
Lenovo ThinkSystem SR630 V4 2 × Intel Xeon 6724P 32 / 64 512 GB DDR5-6400 402
xFusion FusionServer 2288 V8 2 × Intel Xeon 6724P 32 / 64 512 GB DDR5-6400 418

The single-socket Dell PowerEdge R570 scores 204 points. After adding a second processor, the Dell PowerEdge R670 reaches 402 points. That represents an increase of about 97%, indicating nearly linear scaling in this benchmark.

The Lenovo ThinkSystem SR630 V4 delivers the same 402-point result with a similar dual-processor configuration. The xFusion FusionServer 2288 V8 reaches 418 points, approximately 4% more. Differences between systems using the same processors can result from memory configuration, platform settings, software environment, and benchmark parameters. These figures are useful for estimating performance and scaling, but they should not be treated as a direct ranking of server manufacturers.

When Clock Speed Matters More Than Core Count

The Xeon 6724P is designed for applications in which a significant share of the workload does not scale efficiently across dozens of cores. These include transactional databases, financial systems, and enterprise applications that are sensitive to single-thread performance and latency.

The licensing model can be just as important as raw performance. When software is priced according to the number of processor cores, moving from 16 to 48 cores can sharply increase the total cost of the system. The application may not deliver a comparable performance gain in return.

Under these conditions, 16 fast cores may be more economical than several dozen slower ones. The server retains strong per-thread performance and access to Intel’s full enterprise platform without unnecessarily increasing the number of licensed cores.

The opposite applies to dense virtualization, rendering, large container deployments, and highly parallel computing. Performance in these workloads depends more heavily on total core count, so higher-end Xeon models provide greater multi-threaded throughput per socket.

Server Platform Capabilities

The Xeon 6724P retains the capabilities of Intel’s high-end server platform, including eight-channel DDR5-6400 memory, support for up to 4 TB of RAM per socket, 88 PCI Express 5.0 lanes, and multi-socket configurations. A relatively low core count therefore does not mean the server platform itself is limited.

The large number of PCIe lanes supports extensive configurations with NVMe storage, high-speed network adapters, and compute accelerators. The platform also includes specialized Intel acceleration engines for encryption, compression, and data movement.

These capabilities separate the Xeon 6724P from desktop Core and Ryzen processors with similar thread counts. Its value comes not only from its CPU cores, but also from its memory capacity, expansion options, and enterprise infrastructure.

Power Consumption and Cooling Requirements

The Intel Xeon 6724P has a TDP of 210 watts. For a 16-core processor, this is a substantial thermal rating, consistent with its focus on maintaining high clock speeds under sustained workloads.

In a dual-socket system, the processors have a combined TDP of 420 watts. Total server power consumption will be higher once memory, storage, network adapters, and other components are included. Stable operation therefore requires a capable and properly designed cooling system.

Who Should Choose the Intel Xeon 6724P?

The Xeon 6724P is justified in systems where per-core performance and software licensing costs matter more than the total number of threads. Its nearly linear scaling in dual-socket servers makes it possible to expand available compute resources without moving to processors with several dozen cores.

For hosting, rendering, and dense virtualization, higher-core-count models remain more practical. The Xeon 6724P is a specialized processor whose value depends not on thread count alone, but on the specific workload and the software licensing model.
